Achieving Universal Coverage via our Professional Journey
As a doctor, healthcare providers, other doctors, nurses, midwives, and all healthcare delivery staff are always on my mind. What type of healthcare provider do we need to become to not only deliver the highest attainable standard of care based on current evidence, but also to contribute to achieving universal coverage? My experience in training and coaching thousands of health professionals has shown me that what we were taught in medical or nursing school were just the tools to get us started on a lifelong professional journey of continuous learning. On this professional journey, we sometimes need to reinvent our careers, focus our efforts and change how we work to make sure we achieve our mission as health professionals. This journey is very important; it is the journey towards really making a difference.
I believe every healthcare professional wants to make a difference and contribute to save lives and reduce human suffering. Unfortunately, not all succeed. Some get caught in the routine of their jobs and stop moving forward in “their professional journey.” If you feel you are not making a difference, or feel stuck, and it is time for a change, it is a sign that you need to change first. You need to take stock of where you are in your career and develop a new career development plan that will get you back on track. Do not just do your job. Make history. In my work, I have seen many health professionals getting stuck. If you see this, find ways to inspire them to go higher and achieve more. They will thank you for it.
