RGH Video Blog – PEACE (Purpose, Effectiveness, Accountability, Community, Example)
Hello, welcome to Realizing Global Health. My name is Dr. Elvira Beracochea. I am the president, CEO and founder of Realizing Global Health—where we work to develop self-reliant, sustainable health systems that deliver quality healthcare to everyone everywhere every day. Today, we have a special message to our Christian clients. I know that yesterday was Christmas and I hope you had a great time with your families and you were renewed in your faith, hope and love of our Lord Jesus Christ. I want to wish that the upcoming year brings you lots of success working with all of our brothers and sisters from all faiths around the world.
I want to also remind all of you watching this video that there are five letters in the word PEACE:
P – Purpose – We need to really think of our purpose in global health. What is our purpose as human beings and professionals in global health?
E – Effectiveness – How can we be really effective in our work and everything we do day in and day out?
A – Accountability – Be clear in the results that you really get and share those with others. Share both the good and the bad.
C – Community – You have to really work with others. We are all part of the same global health community and we all have to work together. Be part of that community. Renew your commitment to your community.
E – Example – We need to set the example. We need to BE the example. Otherwise, we can only be a warning to others. Be the change you want to be and I am sure we will all make a much bigger impact in global health.
I believe that we are all here for a reason and we need to make the best of that. We are all stakeholders in this global health arena and we all need to do our best to contribute to others. We are here to help others. I think that when things are not going our way, it’s because we are trying to push our agenda instead of really thinking “how can I help you?”
When I was practicing clinical medicine, the first thing I would do when I sat down with a patient was smile and say: “Hello. How can I help you today?” This is the question that always stays with me because every time I started talking to a patient in that way, suddenly the gates were opened and we could share what was going on. This allowed me to know a lot more about how I could help the patient.
It is very important that you have that attitude of being there to help others. I know that sometimes that it is very hard, especially when you have 60 or more patients to see within the span of a day. However, if you start with the right attitude, I promise that you will have a much more rewarding day.
I hope that 2015 is a really a very good year for all of us. It is the year that we measure the targets of the millennium development goals. It is the year that we set a new agenda. So let’s make it count, let’s realize global health. See you next time!
