Are you measuring progress and setting new targets every quarter?
Improving global health requires improvements in the quality and coverage of healthcare delivery in every country. We must aim at and achieve progressive improvement. If you manage a health facility, a global health organization or a project, you must keep moving forward. Every quarter, you should measure where you are and set new targets. Now is the time to set quarterly goals for the January – March quarter of 2015. Below are examples of the goals our clients set:
1. Increase by 10% (or more) the number of facilities that meet diagnosis and treatment standards for cases of malaria in under 5’s
2. Increase by 20% (or more) the number of health providers that wash their hands before examining a patient
3. Improve the completeness of medical records to at least 80% in a sample of medical records in every facility in the district
4. Increase by 10% (or more) the number of facilities that report monthly facility statistics on time and correctly
Demonstrating accountability is essential in global health and one of our most important responsibilities. We must measure everything we do, report what we do, and report how to share lessons learned with other partners in the geographic area we work. Remember your main responsibility is to contribute to improve the countries health surveillance and health information system. Are you doing your share? Consider the following goals for your next quarter:
1. Ensure all my projects are reporting to the country’s health surveillance and health information system
2. Ensure that all my projects contribute to simplify the quantity and improve the quality of the information collected in the facilities we support
3. Ensure that the top five lessons learned in the last quarter are gathered and shared at the next quarterly district team meeting and with the national authorities.
