Are you ensuring healthcare quality standards through your projects and programs?
Global health projects, programs and initiatives have one main goal: Improve the access and quality of healthcare for all. Global health donors and governments must set standards to be met by all those delivering health care everywhere, every day. Standards cannot be postponed. You must set standards and enforce them in all you do.
Imagine if you could click on the button above and download quality standards in a certain country or healthcare delivery setting. What would look like?
- Clean facilities that meet hygiene standards?
- Children that are vaccinated on time according to schedule during their routine health checkups?
- Pregnant women that receive at least four antenatal care visits, Iron and Folic Acid supplements, and have a delivery plan?
- Every youth is treated in a friendly manner and receives family planning and HIV/AIDS counseling?
We do not have such a button to download quality healthcare yet, but in the meantime, new standards are still set based on scientific evidence and enforced through policies. We must assure these standards are met through revised job descriptions, improved performance goal setting, supervision, reorganization of work routines, and streamlined and simplified procedures.
Here are questions you need to ask yourself about ensuring healthcare quality standards:
- Does the country have a policy for health care standards in every one of its health programs such as HIV/AIDS, Maternal and Child Health, Reproductive Health. etc.?
- Does the country have written operating procedures to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare at public and private hospitals, clinics and health centers as well as through community-based providers?
If you answered yes to the either of the two questions above; What is your organization / project / initiative doing to help enforce and report on these standards in the part of the country or the world where you work?
If you answered no to either of the first two questions; What standards will your organization, project, or initiative write down and include the country’s health plan and budget for 2015?
